Web Design That Works

What Is Your Website?

Your website is not a random collection of pages thrown up on the Internet for people to read. Your website is your window to the world. It is your opportunity. It is your opportunity to take your organization and/or your message global overnight. It is your opportunity to level the business playing field. Your organization can have as strong an online presence as any Fortune 500 company. Most importantly, your website is your opportunity to build your brand. It is your opportunity to create an image. It is an opportunity to present your business, product, service, or message to an audience of millions. What is your website? It is your opportunity .

The Merriam Webster online dictionary defines an opportunity as "a favorable juncture of circumstances or a good chance for advancement or progress." So, the ball is in your court. What will do with your opportunity?

What Are The Web Design No-No's?

That is a fairly easy question to answer. The goal of a website is attract traffic and to market your product, service, company, or yourself to the world. The primary mistake that many companies make is to focus too much on the sizzle and not enough on the steak. Although you do want your website to have visual interest, people visit because of the content. Many websites have far too many pictures which cause pages to load slowly. People who surf the Internet are impatient. They want their information and they want it now. So, too many pictures and slow page loads are a no-no. If a website has a lack of relevant, interesting content then that is a no-no.

Additionally, too many websites use programs such as Flash to create animations for the website or entire Flash websites. Flash should be used when appropriate. Again, web deisgn is not about the sizzle, it is about the steak. Don't let the bells and whistles take away from the message. This is a no-no. Your website should be easy to navigate and it should be logically laid out. If a visitor has too much diificulty finding the information they want, then they will simply leave. So, poorly designed navigation is a no-no.

Finally, your website is how you brand yourself. It is how you get your message to the world. So, it is important that there is a consistent theme and message throughout the site. This theme and message should provoke the desired response from the visitor. Your website should be a call to action.
